I was sitting in my McKendree dorm room over looking the cemetery that was connected to our school.

I was lost and just a kid in college with no vision of a future.

I was scrolling through the YouTube home page when a certain video stuck out to me.

Most of my videos on my home page at the time were sports highlights and entertainment.

But I saw this video titled “How to control your mind to get anything you want” by this guy named Ed Mylett. I had zero clue who this guy was but the title spoke to me and the situation I was in.

I watched the video and my life has never been the same since then.

I got exposed to massive mindset, personal development, and success knowledge and training in one video that I didn’t know what hit me.

So I watched another video of his, and another, and another, and another.

I started watching more people around Ed Mylett like Dean Graziosi, Tony Robbins, John Maxwell, Bedros Keuilian, Grant Cardone, and so many more.

I later found out that all these guys were entrepreneurs. Now I wanted to be an entrepreneur. That was the new dream.

I started listening to their advice and I got this thing called the Phoenix Journal off of amazon.

It was this book that had sections for journaling, writing about my dreams, but also places to write actions I wanted to complete everyday and then reflect on the day and what I accomplished later.

That journal became my golden key.

Everyday I was committed to maintaining the journal, getting the action list done, and getting a little better everyday.

It helped me keep my mind focused on my goals at the time and it helped me track my daily actions to get there.

I kept that journal throughout the rest of the year and continued to buy more notebooks and journals to keep up the trend after I dropped out.

To this day I still have a notebook for writing down my plans and ideas and I have a Notion dashboard that tracks all my projects and daily tasks.

It is the greatest thing I have implemented in my life.

This is personal development 101. Writing out your goals and ideas everyday and having a system for completing tasks to get closer to that goal.

There are three different ways we can accomplish this same effect as former athletes.

Option 1: Get a physical notebook or journal like how I did that gives us room to visualize and write things down, but also a structured path to doing the right things to get their through an action list.

Option 2: Get an online software or platform that helps automate certain tasks like planning, organizing, and re-assigning tasks.

Option 3: Get some kind of whiteboard to put in a room or on a wall and fully write out everything yourself so it is clear and visible every single day.

No matter what we are pursuing if we want to be a sports coach, entrepreneur, data analyst, financial advisor, anything that we have in our vision and goals for ourselves, we need a way to stay on the path and do the correct things to get to where we want to go.

I have gone through a lot of different personal development tactics, strategies, routines, I have tried them all…

But the one thing that has always stuck with me is something to write my ideas and dreams down and an action list that keeps me on the path everyday.

Getting to your dreams won’t happen over night.

But it will feel a lot better in the journey to getting there when you have the ability to see the vision everyday and see what you are doing to get there everyday.
